Building Upgrades

Elevator Installation – Completed July 2022

Technically a vertical platform lift, the elevator provides access to the second floor for wheelchairs, strollers and those with mobility or health issues that make climbing our long flight of stairs difficult. It is surrounded by a custom-designed wood and glass enclosure to blend in with the historic ambiance of the building.

This project is funded in part by a New York State Library Construction Grant with support from the Columbian Foundation, Emerson Foundation and private donors.

Interior Lighting Upgrades – In process

The lights within the building are being replaced with brighter, more efficient fixtures that will better suit the space’s high ceilings and historic character. Upstairs lights were completed in Fall 2022, and downstairs lights will be installed in early 2023.

This project is funded in part by a New York State Library Construction Grant.

New Front Steps – Completed Summer 2021

The front steps and ramp were replaced. The new steps were updated to meet code requirements, designed to be more historically appropriate and allow for better access to the building for those with mobility issues.

This project is funded in part by a New York State Library Construction Grant.

Chimney Repointing & Restoration – Completed Fall 2021

Restoring and repointing the library’s three chimneys will prevent further water damage to interior walls (completed November 2021). After this project was completed, the walls were repaired and painted (August 2022).

This project is funded in part by a New York State Library Construction Grant.
