Energy Savers Kits

When the streets are lit and the Dickens characters arrive, that means the holiday season is in full swing! The holidays are a time for celebrating with friends and family at festive gatherings, and no December in Central New York would be complete without elaborate holiday light displays.

Along with the spirit of the season, December is also a time when we notice our electric bills have taken a jump. With more frequent social events, holiday decorations and the winter weather, it makes sense that energy consumption is greater than during other times of the year – but how much greater is it?

The library is a great resource to help you save money on learning tools and year-round activities, and now we can help you track and reduce your electric bill as well.

Kill-A-Watt meters, which are part of our new Energy Savers Kits, will let you know how much electricity your electronic devices, appliances and holiday displays are using, helping you make smart, energyefficient decisions and reduce your monthly electric bill. The meters will also help identify items in your home or business that are using electricity even when they’re turned off.

The meter is easy to use. Just plug it into an outlet and then plug an appliance directly into the meter. A quick press of a button and you have a reliable measure of energy consumption for your appliance. Energy Savers Kits also come with a book containing helpful tips on saving money and energy at home and a thermal leak detector to get you prepped for energy savings in 2018. The kits are available to check out for three weeks with your Skaneateles Library card.

We look forward to seeing you at the library to enjoy one of our many seasonal programs, but please remember the library will be closed on December 24 and 25, reopening for regular hours on Tuesday, December 26. We’ll also be closed on January 1.
