OverDrive/Libby, Kanopy and Hoopla all have free apps. Just go to your app store to download.

The first time you use any of these services, you’ll need to create an account for that service with an email address and password. To complete the setup process, you’ll be prompted to select your library and enter your library barcode number and PIN.

For Libby, select Onondaga County Public Library. For Kanopy and Hoopla, select Skaneateles Library.

Your PIN (Personal Identification Number) is the 4-digit password you chose when you first got your library card. If you’re not sure what it is, just call or visit the library and we can reset it for you.

Libby is the new and improved reading/listening app from OverDrive, created with a fresh, easy-to-use design that’s built for mobile devices. The classic OverDrive app was discontinued in May 2023, so if you’re still using it, we recommend upgrading to Libby. You’ll have access to the same digital content from the OverDrive collection.

Why didn’t they update the original app instead of confusing everyone by creating a new app with a new name? Your guess is as good as ours. Search for Libby by OverDrive in your app store to find the right one.

The apps are the best way to access digital content from a mobile device, but OverDrive, Kanopy and Hoopla all have websites that you can use if you prefer.

First, always try restarting your device and make sure you’ve installed the latest updates for the app and for your device.

If that doesn’t work, we’re happy to help you troubleshoot. This is always easier in person, and please bring your device with you. If you can’t get to us, give us a call or send us an email!

And if you’re comfortable giving it a try on your own, each service has an extensive Help section on their website.

Nope and nope! Materials will return themselves automatically when they’re due, so you never have to worry about fines.

OverDrive/Libby items can be renewed before their due dates in most cases, as long as another patron doesn’t have them on hold. For Kanopy and Hoopla, you can just check items out again, but it will count against your monthly limit.

OverDrive/Libby: check out up to 10 items at one time
Kanopy: use up to 12 tickets per month
Hoopla: check out up to 6 items per month

On OverDrive/Libby and Hoopla, you can download content to your device. You cannot download films from Kanopy; it’s only a streaming service, so you must have internet access to watch videos.

Always feel free to stop by the library, call us at 315-685-5135 or email help@skanlibrary.org.
