How do I get started?
OverDrive/Libby, Kanopy and Hoopla all have free apps. Just go to your app store to download.
The first time you use any of these services, you’ll need to create an account for that service with an email address and password. To complete the setup process, you’ll be prompted to select your library and enter your library barcode number and PIN.
What’s my PIN? Can I reset it?
Your PIN (Personal Identification Number) is the 4-digit password you chose when you first got your library card. If you’re not sure what it is, just call or visit the library and we can reset it for you.
What’s the difference between OverDrive and Libby?
Both the newer Libby app and the classic OverDrive app are made by OverDrive and allow you to borrow, read and listen to the same digital content from the library.
Libby has a fresh, easy-to-use design that’s built for mobile devices. It’s the best app for most users (in our opinion!) and is compatible with Android and iOS devices.
OverDrive has a more robust search function, some added features (like recommending titles for purchase) and is compatible with more devices (including Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows mobile devices and MP3 transfers to a computer).
You can use one or both, depending on your device(s) – it’s totally up to you!
Do I have to use the app?
The apps are the best way to access digital content from a mobile device, but OverDrive, Kanopy and Hoopla all have websites that you can use if you prefer.
The app isn’t working right. What should I do?
First, always try restarting your device and make sure you’ve installed the latest updates for the app and for your device.
If that doesn’t work, we’re happy to help you troubleshoot. This is always easier in person, and please bring your device with you. If you can’t get to us, give us a call or send us an email!
And if you’re comfortable giving it a try on your own, each service has an extensive Help section on their website.
Are there late fines for digital content? Do I have to remember to return them?
Nope and nope! Materials will return themselves automatically when they’re due, so you never have to worry about fines.
What if I’m not finished?
OverDrive/Libby items can be renewed before their due dates in most cases, as long as another patron doesn’t have them on hold. For Kanopy and Hoopla, you can just check items out again, but it will count against your monthly limit.
How many items can I have out at one time?
OverDrive/Libby: check out up to 10 items at one time
Kanopy: play up to 4 videos per month
Hoopla: check out up to 6 items per month
Can I download content for offline use?
On OverDrive/Libby and Hoopla, you can download content to your device. You cannot download films from Kanopy; it’s only a streaming service, so you must have internet access to watch videos.
